The Totem
The totem represents a primitive belief system that spiritually connects human beings with the natural world—an early form of ecological thinking. Choosing a reference totem holds social significance and serves an apotropaic function. For Native Americans, totems are works of art, imbued with symbols of deep cultural and spiritual meaning.
