"Only culture can stop war"
The installation was created to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine while also celebrating the anniversary of April 25, 1945, to commemorate Italy's liberation from Nazi-fascism. It was set up in Milan, in the Courtyard of Honor of the Royal Palace, for three days: April 23, 24, and 25, 2022. With the support of the Municipality of Milan, Mayor Giuseppe Sala, the Councillor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi, and the Director of the Royal Palace, Domenico Piraina, the installation was financed by the sponsor Eidos Partners.
A real tank was placed at the Royal Palace, where people could participate by bringing a book that, after being whitened by the two artists, was placed or thrown against this instrument of war.
The massive involvement of people made it possible for the tank to be completely submerged by over 5,000 books. It was a powerful and disruptive collective gesture, emblematic of hope, like a psychomagic ritual by Alejandro Jodorowsky, where an action speaks louder than words. Together, they created an imposing and mute installation that screamed in every language, "Only culture can stop war."
The artists express themselves through large WhiteBooks installations that can engage the public, addressing various themes: social issues, war conflicts, violence, including intraspecific violence. They propose culture as a means to raise awareness and escape indifference, thus becoming 'Artivism.'
